You need to get Japan Rail Pass before coming to Japan.


Public transportation in Japan is famous for its convenience but also its expensiveness.
If you plan to travel around Japan, it's recommended to get a Japan Rail Pass, which provides unlimited travel on trains. It's very useful because JR lines run literally everywhere in Japan.

The point you should remember is that a JR Pass cannot be purchased inside Japan. You must purchase Exchange Order from an authorized sales office or agent before you arrive at Japan.

As Green cars are so special that most Japanese people don't usually use, "Ordinary Pass" would be enough in general.

To purcahse a Japan Rail Pass, you must meet one of two conditions below.

#1 You are a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sight-seeing, under entry status of "temporary visitor."
(Only persons who have a passport bearing "Temporary Visitor" stamp given by entry personnel can use a JR Pass.)

#2 You are a Japanese national living in a foreign country,
a. who is qualified to live permanently in that country, or
b. who is married to a non-Japanese residing in a country other than Japan.
