> Pickled Plum (Umeboshi)


Very sour but also very healthy.


Umeboshi is famous as a Japanese traditiol and healthy food item. It's a plum pickled in salt and exposed to the sun for drying.

As you see in the picture, there are different kinds of umeboshi with different types of plum and also with different production methods. Because of these differences, some umeboshi are very sour while some are not very much.

Umeboshi is popular and widely used in many kinds of Japanese food and also drink (for example, onigiri and shochu). It's said that umeboshi has effect on digestion and absorption of food, relieving fatigue, and preservation. Therefore, Japanese people often eat rice gruel with umeboshi when they get sick.

Umeboshi plays such an important role in diet of the Japanese.
